I am not a mechanism, an assembly of various sections and it is not because the mechanism is working wrongly, that I am ill. I am ill because of wounds to the soul, to the deep emotional self, and the wounds to the soul take a long, long time, only time can help and patience, and a certain difficult repentance …

As Big E’s caregiver I could not determine his fate without asking him what he  wanted. Should we authorize surgery, commit to drugs and frequent feedings, or end his life? Under the influence of a high dose of steroids his eyes were glassy and unfocused, he avoided physical contact, and preferred to sleep.  This sentient and sensitive being could not …

In February I started a practice of drawing Big E as a means to shift my perspective. I wanted to “see” how my imagination envisioned him.         It is a matter of perception.  Is he resting in the drawing above?  Or, is he leaping in the air?   It’s all about shifting perspectives. Healing requires focused attention …

After two days  I called the  hospital to …

Emergency Veterinary Hospitals, in urban settings, can be modern facilities with state of the art diagnostic equipment and thoughtfully designed interior layouts. We took Big E to a specialized emergency veterinary hospital to have a diagnostic ultrasound of his pancreas.  We had  an appointment with the Radiology Department and arrived on New Years eve at our designated time. First impressions took …

I have a very good friend, a world renowned educator and lecturer, who likes to sum up her expertise as doom, gloom, and death. My friend is a disaster planner and emergency educator preparing corporations and individuals for earthquakes, tsunamis, and fires. Gloom defined as a partial or total darkness is sometimes associated with melancholy or depression, and doom connotes …
