Many grains have a chemical known as phytates.  In animals these phytates block the absorption of minerals, including calcium and therefore they must be removed from grains. If they are not removed mineral absorption from all foods decreases and deficiencies occur.

The way of the ancient traditions, from peoples who knew that digesting grains was a difficult and dangerous prospect, is to remove the phytates by soaking.

To remove phytates you must soak the grains for at least 7 hours.

  • Drain off the water.

  • Cover grains with fresh water — usually 2 cups water to 1 cup grain.

  • Cook the grains overnight on a very low heat.  Use a small crock pot on the low setting.  By morning the grains will be like a porridge rather than light and flaky, but it will be much easier to digest.

  • Use this porridge in the proportions recommended for the animal diet — 25% for dogs and no more than 15% for cats.

Use any grain that you wish following these instructions.

Enjoy a serving of this porridge yourself for a delightful start to your day.
